9.2.4.  Compatibility of quantifiers with count/mass nouns

Quantifiers such a minden 'every, all' are compatible with both count and mass nouns.
minden könyv/víz
every book/water
’every book / all the water’

There are other univeral quantifiers that can only modify count nouns.
mindegyik/valahány alma/*homok
each/every.single apple/*sand

There is a number of quantifier that require semantic plurality, therefore they cannot appear with mass nouns. Such quantifiers are e.g. the existential //néhány// 'a few', the existential //valahány// 'some', the interrogative //hány// 'how.many', or the negative //sehány //'not any number of'.
néhány/valahány/hány/sehány alma/*homok
a.few/some/how.many/not.any apple/sand
’a few/some//how many/no apples/sand’

Quantifiers and mass nouns are always compatible, if the noun has a kind-reading.
Minden/néhány hús büdös.
every/some meat smelly
’Every kind of meat is smelly. / Some kinds of meat are smelly.’
