4.2.3. The semantic properties of the possessive relationship
The semantic properties of the possessive relationship (e.g. alienability) do not seem to influence the choice between copulas. In the examples, the first clause expresses an alienable possession, while the second clause expresses a part-whole (inalenable) relation.
Mari-nak | van | egy | háza-a, | a | ház-nak | pedig | van | egy | padlás-a. |
Mary-DAT | be.3SG | a | house-POSS | the | house-DAT | and | be.3SG | an | attic-POSS |
’Mary has a house, and the house has an attic.’
