3.5.2.  The presence/absence of a locative expression

The locative expression can be absent in existential clauses, but in that case only verb-initial word order is possible.
*(Szellem-ek) van-nak (szellem-ek).
ghost-PL be-3PL ghost-pl
’There are/exist ghosts.’

When there is a locative in the clause, word order is free.
(Szellem-ek) van-nak (szellem-ek) a kastély-ban.
ghost-PL be-3PL ghost-pl the castle-INE
’There are ghosts in the castle.’
