1.1.1. The category of the predicate
The presence/absence of the copula does not depend on the category of the predicate. If the copula is absent, it is invariably absent with a nominal and with an adjectival predicate.
Mari | orvos/magas | (*van). |
Mary | doctor/tall | is |
’Mary is a doctor / tall.’

If the copula is absent, it is invariably absent with lexical and pronominal predicate. The example illustrates the use of interrogatives as predicates.
Mari | micsoda/milyen | (*van)? |
Mary | what/what-like | be.3SG |
’What is Mary? / What is Mary like?’
